The irrigation of turf has always been achieved by the use of overhead sprays of water through sprinklers of various designs. These systems needed large amounts of water at high pressures to work and while this was happening, no use of the area was possible. Now there is an alternative irrigation technique available using a porous rubber hose called Leaky PipeŽ, installed subsurface, it applies the water direct to the root zone without any interruption to play. This system works at low pressure and its gentle watering action is not only very efficient but it helps maintain a good soil structure by encouraging healthy, downward root growth. A network of Leaky PipeŽ can be installed six inches (15cms) or more below the surface, preferrably as a part of the construction process. In some landscape situations, the pipes can be laid into shallow drills in the prepared soil surface, immediately prior to laying the turf. Usually the Leaky Pipes have to be laid at a spacing of between 12"(30cms) to 20"(50cms) apart depending on the soil conditions. These are linked to an automated supply system to apply moisture direct to the soil where it will spread by capillary action. The watering regime is a "little and often" technique. It is important that the water is not forced in too quickly to give the water a chance to dissipate. It is also important that the sub-surface drains evenly if the optimum results are to be gained.
